The admin area is the heart of WordPress. It is where you configure your settings, customize your design, and add content. The interface is very easy to use. Though it isn’t perfect, there are lots of ways in which it could be improved.

It hasn’t been updated in 17 months however Color Admin Posts still works well. The plugin allows you to change the color of the draft, pending, published, future, and private posts. Colors can be chosen using an easy-to-use color picker.

Color Admin Posts makes it very easy to see the status of posts at a glance. Those of you who post regularly on your blog will find it very useful.

2. Post Admin Word Count

One of my favorite features of WordPress is the automatic word count it displays at the bottom of each post or page. It is an essential way of me to know how long my article is. A plugin I only recently found out about is Post Admin Word Count, which adds a new column to your post summary page that displays how many words each post has.

I use it to quickly see, at a glance, how many words each post has. It is also a great way to find long in-depth articles, as the plugin allows you to sort posts by word count.

3. AG Custom Admin

AG Custom Admin is a fantastic plugin that allows you to easily make dozens of small visual adjustments to your admin area. It allows you to change the color scheme of your admin area and add unique background images.

Different parts of the admin area can be enhanced or hidden. For example, should you wish, you can change the admin bar logo, hide admin updates, and completely remove the footer.

4. Cawaii Admin

Cawaii is a fashion magazine that is published in Asia. If you want to make your admin area look Cawaii, Cawaii Admin is right up your street. The plugin completely redesigns the look and feel of the WordPress admin area.

There are lots of different themes to choose from. It is hard to describe the look effectively; you really need to see it for yourself. In addition to the visual changes available, the plugin also allows you to admin and login logos. Meta information can also be switched on and off.

5. Admin Customization

Admin Customization is a practical plugin that lets you change essential settings such as your favicon, logos, and admin footer text. It also lets you change what widgets are shown on the admin dashboard.

6. CodePress Admin Columns

CodePress Admin Coloumns is one of the most useful plugins available to WordPress users. It allows you to control exactly what columns are displayed on your website, and in what order they are displayed.

You simply select the post type you want to modify, select what you want to display, and then drag and drop each item into the order you want them.

There are lots of different columns to choose from, however, one of the most useful is the option of displaying featured images on your post list.

7. Admin Management Xtended

Admin Management Xtended is an AJAX-powered WordPress plugin that lets you make edits from the post list page. This saves you from having from going into the edit page directly. Post settings such as titles, categories, and publication date, can be modified inline.

If you find yourself making a lot of edits to your post meta information, you’ll find Admin Management Xtended very useful.

8. Admin Menu Editor

Admin Menu Editor allows you to rename, reorder, and hide menus from your admin area. You can use the plugin to put frequently used plugins at the top of your menu, and remove those that are not being used.

9. Admin UI Simplificator

If you are designing websites using WordPress for clients, you should try out Admin UI Simplificator. The plugin removes all unnecessary menu items. All that is left is the posts, media, pages, and profile menus. It’s a great way of keeping things simple for people who are easily confused.

10. Admin Menu Tree Page View

Another good menu plugin is Admin Menu Tree Page View. The plugin enhances the page menu so that all of your pages can be accessed easily. As it employs a tree view, different sections can be expanded or collapsed.
